Delicate work is slow and deliberate. Each aerial act I create and perform requires a specific type of strength, discomfort, and movement aesthetic quality. I know how long it will take my body to switch over to the next show. I also want my body to be healthy, pliable, and strong so I can offer the director a grab bag of doable movement for choreography and problem solving. It’s a little bit like constant body modification, especially when you perform on a variety of apparatuses in short bursts of time. So the work starts now, sometimes just weeks and days before. Sometimes, months before. It just depends on the contracts and how the schedule crosses over. I can tell you that the next show chunk requires raw vertical stamina, grip strength, classical ballet lines, a strong right hip, and the ability to perform the acts on stage in a safe manner once or twice a day, on most days for the next couple of months. This delicate part *is* the job, my job, and I love every moment of it.

My favorite way to warm up. As I get older, I am increasingly concerned about my upper body joints stiffening up and my hands becoming permanent fists, because all I do is grab and pull with my ape arms. Flamenco is something extra special for me. So I’ll keep trying to move those little joints through dance. @semillaflamenca ♥️

Often, the longer the pauses are between training or the “next thing,” the louder those internal oppressive little buggers get. You know, those voices that tell you you’re not good enough, you’re not in shape enough, that you need more practice…the ones that tell you to just step aside. The ease-in back into training is about quieting those voices more than anything else. Not letting them paralyze you. Discipline is what I lean on, but curiosity and play are what actually silences them.

It feels like I’ve been away from silks for a bit. It’s always nice to be reminded of why I fell in love with it in the first place. Practice today was feeling a little sluggish, rough around the edges, but there’s movement and rhythm within the fabric that just hugs and carries you, if you let it. Just let it do its thing.

Last month, I had the absolute joy and privilege of performing at the Alberta Circus Arts Festival. Not only that, I decided to make that performance the retirement of this act as “My Funny Valentine”. I performed it mostly in its original form, as an audition piece for my first Cirque du Soleil audition. It’s the silks act that basically shaped my solo career for the past 10 years. You have all seen it performed in some variation in shows throughout the years on many stages. It may not seem like much, but this act has meant a lot to me. When I first started on it, I was still recovering from aerial-related PTSD. It took a bit of work and I remember coach @maxime.c.hansen really helping me confront, acknowledge, and use my fear to my advantage. I received some wise words of wisdom too from the Aerial Arts Festival in Denver @lynndcoleman. Funny thing is, you know it’s the right time to close it off when you can biff your most solid skill completely (I lost my splits balance) and I was totally okay with that. Slightly embarrassed, but it’s fine. I’ve never been perfect, anyway. I’ll never be perfect and that is the point. Thank you @albertacircusarts for having me perform at your festival and for the opportunity to be immersed into your incredible circus community. Thank you @bev.sobelman for your recommendation. Thanks to all my coaches and mentors who’ve helped me bounce along. I’m in this for the long haul. ❤️ 🎪

While true, there are some quirky things happening behind the scenes to accomplish that (and to provide safety margins). One of that is social media management. I will never not love the feeling of playing in fabric. Growing up, my sisters and I (they might argue that it was mostly me), we’d love taking the blankets off our beds and wrapping them intricately to make high fashion. These were our beloved blankets from the swap meet. And with our legs bound in all sorts of ways and hands cramped from desperately contorting to keep our bulky creations together, we’d precariously traverse the house, laughing all the way through our dramatic poses.
